REF's Gods

In the universe of Magician (and all other books derived from that book) by REF, uses mostly a Polytheism belief set in a structured hierarchy. REF uses two secular groups of gods, lesser and greater. The lesser gods are given providence over certain area of existence and are in a sense, representative deities. Their knowledge is perfect when relating to that appointed area of influence. But outside that area their personal knowledge is flawed or educated guesses. Like the God of Death may understand how and why a thing must stop living and may have knowledge about life, but has no concept about justice or what is morally right or wrong. These lesser gods are shaped in to existence by mortals that worship them and give them control over aspects of their lives. A simple flame can give warmth and light but it also can destroy a mortals dwelling. To stop the flames destructive nature a appeasing ritual is create by mortals and a god of fire eventual forms from the constant worship by those who fear the destruction of the flame.

What is referred to as the greater gods have a more abstract and non-concrete aspect to their existence? These gods are the consciences of innate forces that exist without the belief of a god. Forces like creation and destruction or action and procrastinate. These forces are a consistent regardless if there is life or not. The greater gods are not defined by what mortals believe to be their persona but are defined by the forces they are considered to be. However these god consciences can be altered if the forces they represent are altered. Arch-Indar is considered to be died because not many think goodness is the direct result from Arch-Indar, but good and the concept of good still remains despite her absence.

This lesser/greater structure is the paramount belief in REF books in the Magician Universe. The only break is The New Concept which is featured in the stories that encounter the people that live in Novindus and the Tsuranuanni world.

The Tsuranuanni world believes in much larger diverse grouping. There are twenty higher gods and twenty lower gods. There appears to be no logic as to why certain Gods are considered as Higher and why others are Lower. The only patterns are the Higher Gods have a much broader realm of influence and the lower gods have a more narrow sphere. The Higher goddess Sidi is the goddess of death, when the lower equivalent Turkamu is Eater of Hearts, the Red God Sidi collects all that died (old age, accidental, sickens). While Turkamu gathers all those who where murdered, honorable. There is one more unique aspect of these Gods is that they can join and create a new entity.

A History of Midkemia Gods:
By Lore

In Midkemia’s past there has been major upheavals related to the gods. The first upheaval came about the time of the Chaos Wars (the Mad Gods Rage, Star Death, War of the Gods). At this time due to the Valheru’s raiding across the universe. The universe reorganized it self based on these raids and did away with the old gods. The comment is “One day Mythar shredded apart the powers of the world but Rathar never pieced them back together.” This leaves wide speculation about what happen to these two deities and where are they now in present day Midkemia. Suffice to say they where replaced by the new gods of hierarchy. But in the Beginning it was these two distinct blind gods or forces in the universe. Simplistic in nature they drove the existence of the universe. Each was the opposite of the other but yet without the other one, neither could exist. In order for something to have a beginning something must end.

When the Two Blind Gods of the Beginning where replaced the New Order consisted of the forces of abstract aspect. The Gods we know in Midkemia today come from this period. But it was not to be harmonic as the first Two Gods of the Beginning. A fatal flaw was now exposed as the Gods now gained self-consciousness. Being aware of their actions and their functions caused the gods to develop free will. Now they have the ability to develop independently from other beings. With this development they conformed in to their now set roles. But for one god it develop the nature to be flawed which was viewed as being evil, destructive, the power of all negative urges. Due to its flawed nature it is considered to be insane. It strove to undermine the order that was formed, but not being chaotic in nature but to create chaos. This being named Nalar the god of evil, the nameless one, the mad god destroyed or altered many lesser gods and two of the greater gods Ishap and Arch-Indar. But this destruction or alteration is not a permanent thing as these beings are sort of as placeholders. The forces the gods represent doesn’t go away they endure but can be reassigned to a different representative consciousness. This period was referred to as the Chaos Wars, Mad Gods Rage, Star Death, and War of the Gods which occurred directly after the fleeing of the Two Blind Gods of the Beginning. It’s sufficed to say the struggle for control among these new gods occurred instantaneous when they came to existence. The god of perfection and positive impulse and the god the brought balance where lost, as well as numerous lesser gods.
With two greater gods lost or missing the other greater gods joined forces and changed the location of the consciousness of the god that was creating mayhem until everything was restored to normal. This joining of forces has only occurred once, as one of the forces is not to do anything at all. These remaining Greater Gods that have circumvented Nalar are known as the Four Builders. These four build the thought of beings or impulses of action (abrem-Sev), thinking or planning (Ev-Dem), wishing or aspiration (Graff), and abstain or procrastinate (Helbinor). However the essence of these two lost greater gods are reforming and these lost gods Ishap and Arch-Indar slowly return to the world of Midkemia.

The New Concept

Century’s later, new dogma challenged the current one and called for a restructuring of the gods. This new dogma (similar to Hinduism in our world) structure was that there was a central godhead, and all other gods where aspects or avatars to understanding the One True Path to the one. This concept sparked a bloody civil war which in the end the new followers of this dogma where exiled from Triagia and settled in Novindus. The new dogma originated inside the Ishap Temple from those who sought better enlightenment and understand of the nature of the gods, and deduced this concept. This new concept coining the word henotheism is the devotion to a single god while accepting the existence of other lower deities. And its these deities that speak and lead a path for the individual to the One True Path that leads to the One God Geshen-Amat.
